And it’s big business. Sales of PPI as it’s called, earn lenders more than 1billion a year. PPI is designed to protect borrowers by paying monthly loan repayment in the event that the borrower becomes unemployed or unable to work though accident or illness. Many lenders sell the insurance alongside the loan with around 50% of customers agreeing to the insurance. However, according to the Department of Trade & Industry, only 4% claim and of these claims 25% are rejected. This may be partially explained by the FSA’s investigation which found that around half of the lenders surveyed failed to explain the details and exclusions to customers or make sure the insurance was suitable for the clients. Whilst the investigation reportedly does not find that lenders are compulsorily selling the insurance, it was frequently automatically added to loan quotations without it being disclosed that the insurance was, in fact, optional. Even worse, some lenders are failing to point out to borrowers that the cost of the insurance for the full period of the loan, was being added as a lump sum at the outset rather than being paid as a monthly premium. This means that the borrower cannot cancel the insurance without redeeming the entire loan and renegotiating a new loan. And hey, some of these lenders certainly know how to charge for PPI. According to Simon Burgess, Managing Director of British Insurance Ltd, one of the big high street banks typically charge 30 per 100 of loan insured. This, he says, compares with between 4 and 6 if bought separately on the internet. This view is supported by price comparison service uSwitch which says taking out PPI with banks can increase the amount you pay for cover by nearly 500%. Take an example. Last year a high street bank was charging 5,150 for PPI to cover a loan of 16,000. The cost of PPI was then added to the loan making 21,150 as the total capital repayable and interest charged on the lot. This meant that of the 300 monthly repayment, about 70 represented the cost of the insurance. Equivalent insurance can be bought on the Internet for around 20 per month and cancellable at any time without penalty. So what are the lessons? If your lender offers you PPI cover ask for the monthly premium with and without PPI. That way you can see the true cost of PPI. Find out whether PPI is added to the loan as an initial lump sum. If it is back off! Shop around for competitive quotes. A search on the Internet for Payment Protection Insurance or Income Protection Insurance will find you lots of web sites to try. Check out the conditions on the insurance. Particularly check out the exclusions which invalidate a claim. For example, some policies stipulate that you must have been working continuously for 6 months prior to a claim for a minimum of 20 hours a week. Seasonal or temporary work is usually excluded. When you take the insurance out you must be in good health and know of no impending disability and not be aware that you could become unemployed. Could these exclusions apply to you? By John T Jones, Ph.D. When I was a kid, everybody belonged to a neighborhood gang. There were seldom any meetings. In fact, the gang never formed unless there was an emergency. That occurred when neighborhoods clashed. In our case, war was declared annually. Great preparations were made. We made arrows from celery stocks and puts nails in the end for weight. The nail was pushed into the end of the stock leaving a blunt end. Much research was done to turn the nail around into a more lethal weapon but no design was completely successful. For spears, we used heavier stocks. Tomahawks were made from the base of extra thick stocks by cutting them at about the 16 inch level and then pulling them out with the root clod intact. Sometimes rocks were collected to be used as hand grenades. Sometimes the battles drifted into our neighborhood but they always ended up at the Celery Patch, a six acre patch which included dried up irrigation ditches perfect for trenches. Special preparations were made before the battle. Huge tumbleweed forts were built and the weaponry was stored there. Things happened early on the day of battle. Our gang was always in place early in the morning on the first day of battle and spies were sent out to find the Halford gang which always fought with the members of the Buck gang. War started when the Halford / Buck gang finally got out of bed and assmbled. We were always outgunned and outnumbered but our valor made up for any battlefield shortages. The war always ended the same way. We torched the forts and caused great panic to the neighbors. Out would come the garden hoses and wet gunny sacks to fight the fire. By the time the fire department and the police arrived we would be throwing house bricks at each other. The firemen would put out the fire and the police would send us packing for home. An old lady said, “You’ll burn my house down!” But we had switched to throwing bricks we found on the ground. By Mary Hanna Garlic, leeks, and shallots have a little cousin, the chive. It is the smallest and non-odorize member of the onion family. The leaves sprout from a bulb that is planted in the herb garden or in a container garden. Chives are a marvelous way to spruce up omelets or soups, even stews, chicken, or fish and its fat free, a healthy addition to your diet. A sunny windowsill can also be used to grow the chive herb. An added bonus, if you grow chives in your in ground herb garden, you are in the fresh air and are getting a little exercise. Cant hurt, huh? The chive has been a native of Asia and Europe for over 5000 years. They grow much like grass, in clumps. They send up graceful hollow leaves that will flower into lovely purple puffballs. If you allow the chive in your herb garden to flower the flavor of the chive becomes harsher. It is not hard to grow the chive in your herb garden or container garden. It needs six hours of sun, well drained soil, moisture, fertilizer and pinching back. The pinching back will make the plant bushy and lush. Always use a high quality potting soil when growing your herb in container gardens. If planting the chive in an in ground herb garden, add some organic mix. A seaweed based fertilizer is best for feeding. You can use your old coffee grounds to mulch around the base of the chive in your herb garden. When its time to harvest the herb cut from the base to encourage more growth. It is recommended that you harvest the chives before it flowers. If your chive does flower you can eat the chive flower but they are intense and should be pulled apart before use. They have a spicy, peppery taste. As your herb garden or container garden ages, you will want to pull the plant up and divide the roots and then replant. The chive prefers a cool atmosphere so if you live in a hot area it is best to grow the chive in pots inside. If you have an abundance of chives, make an herb salt by mixing one cup of sea salt with one cup of snipped chives. Bake in an oven for 45-60 minutes, seal tightly in a jar and place in a dark cabinet. This is a great way to spice up any culinary dish. To dry the chive harvest snip into inch pieces, lay in thin layers on trays. Take them outside to a sunny spot and allow drying for 8 to 10 hours. An alternative method is to snip the chives, spread on a cookie sheet and dry them in a 110 degree oven with the door propped open for 4 to 6 hours. Fresh chives can be store in the refrigerator for up to one week in a plastic bag. Do not wash or snip until ready to use. Here is a recipe for an elegant soup that uses the chive as a garnish. 1 cup sliced raw potatoes small cauliflower, flowerets separated. 3 cups of milk 4 tablespoons of soft butter Snipped chives as needed Cook the cauliflower, 3 cups of the milk, potatoes and salt until the vegetables are tender. Place the mixture into a blender and blend until smooth, (do this in batches). Place the puree back into pot, dilute with the remaining milk, heat for 5 minutes then stir in the butter. Put the soup into pretty bowls and garnish with the snipped chives. Serve with thin slices of French bread that has the crust removed and has been sauteed in butter until lightly brown on both sides. By Carl Mueller Should you get reimbursed for interview travel expenses? I’ve helped a number of job searchers who had to travel a fair distance to get to an interview. In most cases the hiring manager I was dealing with would cover reasonable interview expenses. In some cases it was a fairly easy answer especially when it involved flying a person in. In this case, I have never had an experience where a company required someone to fly in for an interview and didn’t pick up the costs ie. I have never had a job searcher have to pay out of their own pocket to be flown in an interview. A reasonable company would cover the costs for flying someone in for an interview, I believe, if they were really interested in the person and were interested in gaining a reputation as a reasonable company. It doesn’t take long for companies to get a reputation for doing things the “wrong way” and this case, being cheap if they force potential employees to pay for their own airfare, hotel, etc! But what if you need to incur interview travel expenses for out of town interviews that you drive to? This is probably a case of dealing with this situation on a case by case basis. Of course I’m not talking about requesting interview travel expenses for driving across town for an interview and expecting that the interviewing company will pay for your gas or parking. I wouldn’t expect that although I have heard of some hiring managers who offer to take care of parking expenses. I’m talking about a situation where you have to drive a longer distance, perhaps several hours or longer, and one that might require you to stay overnight. I had one client who was a 4 hour drive away from where I worked and since most of the job candidates I was sending this client lived in my city, most of these people were taking an 8 hour trip (return) to attend the interview. Some had to go back for a second interview. This company generally only covered driving expenses for people who had to drive back for a second interview since they tried to interview people over one day to avoid having to ask the interviewee to come back again. Would I recommend asking a potential hiring company if they would pick up your interview travel expenses if they don’t offer to do so? Unfortunately this question is not one that necessarily has a black or white answer because it really depends on specifics. The best thing you can do is look at things on a case by case basis and use common sense. You don’t want to lose out on a job for asking to be reimbursed for $20 in gas, do you? If the travel costs are significant and you’re working with a recruiter, you might ask them if their client picks up travel expenses and get their help. If you’re dealing directly with the company without a recruiter, it will probably be a judgment call on your behalf. Mind you if these travel costs are significant and the company doesn’t offer to pay or refuses to pay for them, it might be a not-so-subtle indication of how this company treats people. We dont live in a perfect world unfortunately. Certainly if you need to be flown in for an interview I’d be surprised if the company did not pick up the expenses but if you’re driving in, the company may treat things on a case by case basis or simple expect you to cover them. By Gabriel J. Adams In Judaism, a boy takes on the responsibilities of an adult in the Jewish community at the age of thirteen. As an observance of this occasion, a ceremony is held often followed by a celebration. Now days, this ceremony and celebration are often mistakenly referred to as a Bar Mitzvah. The Bar Mitzvah is not the event but the boy the event is being held in honor of. The word ‘bar’ is Hebrew for son and ‘mitzvah’ is the word for commandment. Thus, at thirteen, a boy becomes Bar Mitzvah, or Son of the Commandment. Before the age of thirteen, the parents have full responsibility for the boy’s actions in regard to Jewish law and tradition. Once a boy is thirteen, he becomes fully accountable for his own actions, whether good or bad, in keeping the laws and traditions of his community. He is also now privileged to participate fully as an adult, as well. He can be called to read from the Torah (the five books of Moses) and Haftarah (the books of the Prophets), and be part of a Minyan or prayer quorum. Jewish boys look forward to becoming Bar Mitzvah with much anticipation. Marking the occasion with ceremony and celebration is only part of it. There is a lot of preparation that goes into the ritual aspect of the commemoration. It often begins long before the age of thirteen. Getting ready to lead the prayer service on the day of Bar mitzvah takes time. There is much to learn. The young man will not only recite the blessings for the Torah reading, and read from the Torah and Haftarah, he will most likely give a d’var Torah (discussion on the Torah portion for that week), as well. When the time comes and the young man is called up to do these things, it is called aliyah, which is Hebrew for ‘going up’. Usually, the parents present the young man with his first tallit, which he will wear during this service. He will wear one now every Shabbat (Sabbath), and often, every time he prays. On this occasion, too, it is traditional for the young man’s grandfather to give him his first set of tefilin. These are black boxes with straps that are worn during prayers except on Shabbat and Holy Days. The boxes contain written portions of the Bible. They are a sign of the relationship between G-d and the Jew. Now that the young man has entered adulthood, his relationship with G-d will grow closer as he follows the laws and traditions he was taught throughout childhood. After the ceremonial service, a celebration is certainly in order. But it should not be the focal point of the day. That being said, the enjoyment of good food, good music and dancing are to be much looked forward to. It is a good time for friends and family to congratulate the new Bar Mitzvah. By Fran Matthews Fleece tie blankets are very popular, and now you can choose your favorite Star Wars fleece fabric and make your own blanket in two hours or less! Fleece is affordable and easy to work with. Best of all, it makes the blanket snuggly and warm. The following are some general step-by-step guidelines to follow as you make your fleece tie blanket: 1. Determine the size of the blanket you want to have. Fleece is generally 60 inches wide, and I like to use a length of about 2 yards. This makes the blanket a good comfortable size. 2. Using a coordinating color, add a second swatch of fleece to the other side of the blanket. After tying these two layers of fleece together, you will have a double layered blanket, which means double the snuggle power! 3. Match up your two pieces of fleece, and use safety pins to temporarily secure them together. This will prevent the layers from sliding apart unintentionally. You can remove these safety pins once you have finished tying the edges together. 4. Cut 5 x 5 inch squares out of each corner. This is done to prevent bunching of the material when the corners are tied. Then, form a line 5 inches in from the outer edge of the material. Mark it with tape or just lay a tape measure along this border as you work. Now, cut 1-inch wide strips through both layers of fleece, stopping when you get to the 5-inch border you just created. Only cut about 20 sets at a time, or you may have difficulty keeping the strips matched up. 5. Tie the 1-inch strips of the first layer to the 1-inch strips of second layer. You can do this with a square knot or just a basic double knot, whichever you prefer. Tie these strips all the way around the edges of the blanket. 6. Once you have tied the strips together all the way around the blankets edge, you are finished. It was that simple! So, pop your popcorn, pick out your favorite movie, and enjoy your new blanket. Fleece tie blankets make wonderful gifts for friends and family. Star Wars is quite popular in my family, so I chose to make a Star Wars blanket. However, you can use another pattern or design. As for cleaning the blanket, I like to machine wash it with cold water and dry it on a gentle setting. This will prevent color fading, and keep your blanket in good condition.
