The Big-Ten Top Five

June 22nd, 2008 by mairhengl

By Chris Stout Arriving at a definitive ranking of schools is a complex process, and often one that stirs fierce debate. School pride runs deep with alums, particularly those who graduated from Big-10 universities. No one wants to see his or her beloved alma mater dropped even a notch in the all-important competition to be number one. We see this in the public sphere as athletic teams go head to head and as university departments vie for research dollars. The bumps and bruises threatened on these fields of battle pale in comparison to the emotional wounding attempted on those who contributed to researching this list. Rest assured, though the pressure may have been intense at times, this list reflects the reality of what students are experiencing at these schools as closely as possible, and not the effectiveness of advocates outside this process. What is the very best school to attend? The decision can change the course of a life and should not be made lightly. To arrive at this list, careful consideration was given to students’ academic experience, quality of life, success of alumnae, and many other factors. We believe what follows is an accurate grading of the top five Big-10 schools. 1. Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI Michigan State University tops our list due to an outstanding combination of academic rigor and quality of life. With 150 undergraduate majors and 14 colleges granting degrees, Michigan State sets the high-water mark for the Big-10. Michigan State professors are often praised for working closely with students. The school’s career placement office is among the best and most effective in schools in and out of the Big-10. 2. Northwestern University, Evanston, IL Just 30 minutes outside of Chicago, Northwestern University earns a secure second place on our top five Big-10 list. Northwestern offers strong academics with a wide range of majors available to undergraduates. Proximity to Chicago is a significant plus for Northwestern students, allowing them not only cultural enrichment (a.k.a. nightlife), but opportunities for internships and study, which Northwestern’s curriculum often takes great care to integrate. 3. Penn State University, State College, PA A late addition to the Big-10—the school joined in 1990—Penn State University has consistently impressed with its academic seriousness and high quality of life for students, earning the school the third slot on this list. Penn State is a multi-campus behemoth, offering a wide variety of experiences to students. Enrolling more than 81,000 students at 24 campuses, it is at the University Park campus in State College that Penn State demonstrates the highest degree of excellence. 4. Ohio State University, Columbus, OH Fourth on the list is Ohio State University (OSU). OSU offers high-caliber academics for undergrads and graduates. New students encounter a carefully tailored program for freshmen, shaping new Buckeyes from some of the best students in and around Ohio and the rest of the nation. 5. University of Illinois, Champaign, IL Rounding out the list at number five is the University of Illinois in Champaign. The second Illinois campus in the top five, the University of Illinois earns its slot with a stellar mix of academics, social life, and athletic programs. 1100 organizations and clubs battle for student participation on the giant campus, with research a major focus of academic life. University of Illinois, an exemplary Midwestern campus, helps maintain the high quality reputation of all the Big-10 schools. Dating in the New Millenium

June 19th, 2008 by mairhengl

By Melissa Seifert Over the past 20 years the face of dating has gone through some noticeable changes. Traditional methods of finding a date would be to rely on friends to play matchmaker or to attend bars, various different social events and parties. We now rely on internet service providers to open the doors for romance. Whether we like it or not, the internet has changed our lives especially in the way we date and meet people. Men and women have moved their search for love to the internet simply because it is the most convenient in terms of time and money. However, along with this convenience also comes risk. Sure it takes the pressure off witty meaningful conversation, but how fun is that? And how do you know if the person who you are speaking with via text messaging actually looks like their picture or has all the great characteristics that they say they do? You cant read their body language to determine if they are genuine, dull or most importantly how they flirt, which is primarily the most important interaction you share with someone you are interested in. This is why in our striving to make things better, there is now a combination of the traditional meets cutting edge. Its called Speed Dating; this concept takes the demand of our fast paced society and still gives you the opportunity to meet someone face to face. Its a very good way of meeting a large number of people in a fun environment and in a condensed period of time. Speed dating may be the new way to meet but after the first date, you must use traditional dating methods to make sure that your relationship grows. Attending Singles parties in the past was deemed as an act of disparity but now they are becoming less and less unconventional. These parties are growing in popularity simply because we like to connect with people. Nothing beats a cheerful conversation and there is no better way of learning about someone than looking them in the eye and asking them a question. The one mistake people make is that they want perfectand they want it fast. The only way to find your perfect fit is to take the time and put your self out there as much as possible. Many people will go to a bar and stand around waiting to be approached, or take in enough liquid courage so that they can do the approaching. bit of a hintno one finds drunken people attractive. Singles parties and speed dating events are for single people that are sick of standing around bars getting no where and for those who want to get to know a person face to face. Every person who comes out to a Single in the City event is there for the same reason, to meet new people for friendship or perhaps a future relationship. At these events you have eliminated 3 potential risks: Are they single? Are they looking to have a conversation? And Are they open to meeting me? It is not to say that you NEED to come to these events to meet someone, it is just simply the smartest way of doing so. Are Weight Loss Pills Safe

June 15th, 2008 by mairhengl

By Tony Jay The weight loss industry is currently awash with slimming products that make wild and spurious claims to be the best or cheapest on the open market. Unlike prescribed slimming pills, non prescription or over the counter products do not need to undergo the same rigorous testing and standardizing procedures and so manufacturers along with the retailers are keen to get the products out to market with minimal clinical evidence and sell on the strength of cheap rather than proven via clever marketing and advertising. The market is volume driven with the emphasis on quantity rather than quality. Who Buys Slimming Pills. Slimming tablets, supplements or pills are sold to desperate consumers eager to control their weight, the majority of the industry understands this and so their message appeals. Fast and Rapid are words that are often used to sell. Rapid and Weight Loss should not appear in the same sentence. The weight loss pill industry is huge. Currently, in the United States alone it is worth over sixty billion dollars ($60 billion) with over 10% of the products sold either fraudulent or harmful. What Are The Types Of Weight Loss Pills. Possibly the best known weight loss supplement available to buy today is Hoodia. Hoodia is a natural ingredient that comes from a cactus like plant that grows in desert like conditions of South Africa.Hoodia contains a chemical called P57. P57 is an extremely powerful and effective substance that acts as an appetite suppressant. The problem with Hoodia is that it also contains a dozen other chemicals that are of no use in fight for weight loss. The process for extracting the P57 from Hoodia (Gordonii) takes over 5 years, this is costly and time consuming. In recent times Hoodia rather than P57 has become synonymous with weight loss and so an estimated 80% Hoodia branded slimming products contain no trace of P57. So in effect consumers are buying Hoodia related products without any appetite suppressing substance. Other appetite suppressants such as Ephedra and Phentermine can be purchased over the counter but both have negative side effects. Ephedra can cause both physical and mental damage to the consumer. It is an amphetamine-like compound that stimulates the central nervous system, misuse can lead to life threatening consequences. The FDA has issued several warnings about the use of Ephedra as diet product. Phentermine is usually a prescribed medication for the clinically obese, although this can be bought over the counter advised use is short term and under strict medical supervision. Although the potential side affects are mild they are very real; blurred vision, dry mouth, sleeplessness, irritability, chest pain and palpitations. Fat burning and blocking supplements have very little evidence surrounding them to suggest that they can be effective as a slimming aid. Fat burners; Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) is a fatty acid produced by bacteria found in the stomachs of livestock type animals (cows and sheep) as well as certain types of plants such as sunflowers and safflowers albeit in smaller quantities. At present it is not clinically proven that CLA is effective as a weight reducing product. Initial studies have shown very little conclusive proof. However studies have shown that expectant mothers or mothers that are breast feeing should avoid this type of supplement. Fat blockers; there have been some hysteria surrounding Chitosan a fibre extracted from shellfish. Outrageous claims have been made but most of the studies have been carried out on animals and as yet it is unproven on humans. In conclusion both fat burners and fat blockers have no scientific or medical evidence that they work and have no long term side effects. This is also an expensive choice. Prescribed Weight Loss Pills. Xenical (Orlistat) are mostly used for clinical obesity and cannot be purchased legally over the counter. A consultation with a doctor or GP is required. Xenical binds with dietary fat and stops them being absorbed into the body. Although this is a proven method for losing weight doctors are often only to prescribe to the obese, meaning that the slightly overweight are often denied the medication. Over The Counter Fat Binders. Fat binding is possibly the most effective way to combat obesity and control weight. Although relatively new to the market a product called Proactol has been given medical backing, approval and is now a certified medical product (MDD 93/42/EEC) and is manufactured in accordance to EN ISO 13485:2003 standards. Proactol is a 100% herbal product and unlike Hoodia has a standard attached to it. So consumers can be confident that they are buying and administering something that contains the weight reducing element. It is important to remember that for the advantages a pill, tablet or supplement can give, for absolute success in achieving weight loss targets a healthy diet and exercise is also required. There’s Help for Asthma in Yoga

June 7th, 2008 by mairhengl

By Foras Aje Perhaps it was predestined that I should have had asthma as a kid, discover Yoga as an adult, correct my respiratory health with it and now be blessed to write about my experiences with using Yoga (amongst other things) to control my asthma symptoms. If this is the case, then I am honored. Either way it goes, I can say with much confidence that based on my experiences, one helpful exercise for alleviating Asthma symptoms and dealing with its many inconveniences is Yoga. Owing to its gentle poses and stretches and the deep breathing involved in Yoga, certain poses-when used correctly-can be very helpful for smoothening the chronic inflammation of the bronchial tubes (airways) that causes swelling and narrowing (constriction) of the airways as is the case in Asthma patients. Furthermore, when using Yoga as an exercise for asthma control, one need not worry about the common exercise-induced asthma attacks that may come as a result of vigorous activity as these poses are very calm and involve very little motionhey, its Yoga after all. Now, friends, based on my experiences and several studies that support these facts, the following poses can be a powerful add-on therapy to reduce the frequency and intensity of asthma attacks as well as to decrease medication use. The Shoulder Stand & Its Counter Poses for Asthma Inversion poses in yoga drain excess mucus from the lungs and balance the immune system. Now, let me introduce you to perhaps the simplest of these poses, the shoulder stand pose. Although the Shoulder-Stand has been coined by several Yoga sages as a near panacea or cure-all, as far as Asthma is concerned, it is indeed very helpful in regards to relieving excess encumbrances in the respiratory organs and owing to its deep breathing, it increases the lungs airflow, capacity, stamina and efficiency. Here comes the best part, its counter poses. You see, some yoga poses, owing to the execution of them that is, have to be offset by a pose in an opposite spinal direction (another subject, but hopefully you get the gist). Now friends, this Shoulder-stand pose has 2 main counter-poses: the Bridge and the Fish Poses. (No worries they are very simple to perform.) Both of these poses are back bending postures that open up the chest improving both lung and heart functioning. As a matter of fact, the very last pose (the fish pose) is one of the specific poses mentioned by Sri Swami Devananda and IBS Iyengar (two of the most authoritative figures in modern day yoga) as being specifically useful for removing spasms from the bronchial tubes and thus relieving Asthma. Other Helpful Poses: There are other poses such as the forward bends which you can practice specifically if it is more difficult to inhale. These include the Head-knee Pose (Passchimothanasa) and it basically involves grabbing your toes, ankles or feet with the head lowered as far as possible to touch the knees. Now, friends, remember I mentioned counter-poses right? Well, for this particular pose, its counter-poses basically are backward bending poses that include the Incline Pose and Bow Pose. Both of these (especially the latter) open up the chest and should be practiced to aid with exhaling during asthma attacks. Last, but not least is the simple, yet extremely effective Relaxation Pose. Yes, you guessed it right, just simply lie flat on your back and breathe in a controlled and rhythmic pattern. By practicing rhythmic, controlled breathing techniques daily, the respiratory muscles and lungs develop the ability to breathe more slowly all the time, meaning less stress on the airways in general. In addition to these poses, let me briefly mention the Bellows breath exercise (a yoga breathing exercise) as this helps tremendously. As the name may suggest, it involves purposely pumping the stomach in an inward motion and exhaling through the nose simultaneously in controlled movements. This removes spasms and tones up the respiratory system significantly. At this point, it must be mentioned that Yoga does call for a healthy diet in its use andas a physical and spiritual system; it does call for a mostly vegetarian diet. Friends, for asthma problems, you may want to strongly consider this as giving up all processed foods and animal products such as meat, milk, eggs and the like from your diet is a must and a fact that has been in effect in several programs aimed at correcting respiratory health such as the “Breath Retaining Program For Asthmatics” developed by the Russian, Dr. Buteyko. Within weeks of adhering to this advice, many a chronic asthmatic has been able to give up the use of ventolin inhalers. So the next time asthma sends you to the doctor, you may do well to ask for a new prescription for asthma treatment-Yoga. I believe it wont hurt and possibly could help you immensely. Some Information About GSM Mobile Bands

June 1st, 2008 by mairhengl

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dhruba_M]Dhruba M GSM is the most popular standard for mobile phone service in the world. In more then 200 countries in the world people using GSM mobile service. However, different countries use different GSM Radio frequency for their mobile networks. Worldwide four frequencies are widely used for GSM mobile services. They are 850MHz, 900 MHz, 1800MHz and 1900MHz Although 850, 900 and 1800, 1900 frequency are very close, normally mobile phones cant receive more then one frequency at-a-time, a phone that works with one band, can not receive signals of other bands. So if you want your mobile to work with multiple bands, you need to have multi band mobiles. Based on your need, you can go for dual, tri or quad band mobile set. As a whole, both high and low frequency bands have some advantage and disadvantages. For high frequency service, the network is less effected by the influences of the weather. And you can have more clear and un-interrupted connection. Another advantage of a high frequency is that you only need small antenna. Main disadvantage of higher frequency band is its lower reach. These bands are good for cities where density of mobile users is more. Where as, lower frequency bands are good for rural areas because of their large area reach. 850 MHz is the lowest frequency used for GSM mobile service. As a result of this, 850 MHz network has a bigger and more penetrating reach then the 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz network. Apart from that, the difference between the 850 MHz and the 900 MHz network hardly noticeable. Lower frequency services are good in big building because of their more penetrating reach. A disadvantage of a low frequency network is its low capacity. 900 MHz networks are quite old networks. Like 850 MHz, 900MHz also has a bigger and more penetrating reach then the 1800 and 1900 MHz network. 1800 MHz is a relatively high frequency for cellular phones. Because of this, 1800 MHz networks have a smaller and less penetrating reach compare to 900 and 850 MHz networks. By this the reach in big buildings is low. An advantage of 1800 MHz networks is that the capacity is bigger. This band is idle for cities where density of mobile users high. 1900 MHz available only in North America, some networks in Canada and South Africa. This band is not available in Europe or Asia. 1900 MHz quite similar to 1800MHz. Because of high frequency 1900 MHz band network isnt interrupted by the influences of the weather and you can have a crystal clear connection most of the times. For this network, GSM provider need to use more mini antennas. An advantage of 1900 Mhz networks is that the capacity is bigger. The Power of Touch

May 29th, 2008 by mairhengl

By Dave Thomas Touch plays a very powerful part in the flirting game. If you get it right, a touch will advance your rapport with your date by leaps and bounds; time it wrongly and you’ve lost whatever chance you had. As you must touch eventually, it’s vital to get it right! What you need to do is to learn exactly when you need to touch your date, and in what form that touch should take. You might decide to “accidentally” bump into the person in order to meet them; that a light brush of the upper arm is required, removing a cotton thread that may or may not be there; that taking your date’s hand, and lightly stroking it is appropriate; or, perhaps, that no action at all is needed for now, because your date is not used to being touched! Perhaps you might decide on some other form of touching. You can usually tell by the body language of your date whether a touch would have the intended effect. If he/she is leaning in towards you, seems positively enthralled by your company, and is physically quite close to you, then chances are good that a touch would be welcome. At this time, any touching you do should be kept light, and you need to study the reaction. If you see your date suddenly tense up and start to look uncomfortable, you need to back off, slowly and gracefully, but without drawing undue attention to it. If your date seems to welcome the touch, then keep it going! Touching in a dating context provides feedback for your date; by touching him/her, you are implying that you think the date is going well, and that you fancy him/her. For this reason, and perhaps partly as a test of the man’s confidence, the first touch is usually performed by the man. The woman will usually facilitate this when she is ready by positioning herself close to her date, but she probably won’t want to appear too keen. However, there is no rule that says the first touch should always be initiated by men! For example, a woman who is quite keen on a man may “accidentally” brush up against him on his way to the toilet! Many people grew up in tactile families, and these enjoy being touched more; for these people, it is less important where the touch comes from. For them, a touch will have less power, simply because it is familiar; it is expected behaviour. Others grew up in non-tactile families, and these have to be comfortable with the person touching before they will even accept a touch. If you time it correctly and do not touch too soon, the touch performed on this type of person will have a much greater effect, simply because they are not used to it. Imagine sending a shiver down the spine of your date by touching him/her at the right moment! If you’re a man on a typical dinner date, you would be well-advised to look out for this specific sign from the woman you’re with. These are situations where she is keen on you, and demonstrates this by laying one of her arms across the table, so that her hand is on “your” side of it. Her arm and hand then remain quite still. If this happens, you need to take action and touch her hand, if you want to advance the flirting game! Don’t think about it too much; just do it. If you’re a woman on a typical dinner date, and don’t want to seem too eager, you’ll want to position one of your arms as I have outlined above. Along with good eye contact, a slight smile, and perhaps even a lick of your lips, these are excellent signs to send that you’re ready to crank the flirting up a notch! Wedding Dress Trends - Top Wedding Dress Styles for the Modern Bride

May 26th, 2008 by mairhengl

By Cori Locklin Weddings are all about personal style. Reflecting the overall trend of breaking away from tradition and steadfast rules, modern brides are choosing wedding gowns that reflect their personality and visionnot necessarily their grandmother’s. The only rule for wedding dress style these days is to choose a style that suits you. Whether that means wearing a gold wedding dress, trouser suit or sundress, go with it! And even if you are more traditional and have always envisioned yourself as the fairy princess in the white satin ballgown, you needn’t worry about being perceived as old fashioned or “not with the times.” The modern “rule” for wedding dress style is to choose something that makes you feel comfortable and beautiful on your most special day. The 21st Century Bride - That said, although certain traditional dress styles are always popular, bridal fashion does follow mainstream fashion to some extent. So if you are looking for something a little more contemporary or “now,” consider turning to the catwalks for inspiration. The currently popular 20sand floralstyle dresses can be easily incorporated into a wedding dress. Accessories, such as chandelier earrings, can also transfer from the catwalks to comprise your wedding look. Try to avoid fashion that will date quickly, however, as you will want to display your wedding photographs for a long time. As a general rule, keep your wedding ensemble fashionably forward, not overly trendy. Today’s Hot Wedding Dress Trends: Add Some Color - Using a wedding dress to bring out a colorful personality, modern brides are not afraid to add a splash of color to the traditional white gown. Whether that means adding a colored ribbon or piece of jewelry or foregoing the white wedding dress all together, today’s brides find inventive ways to incorporate color into their wedding attire. Particularly popular shades are blue, pink, cappuccino and champagne. Lace Up - Lace has made a recent comeback, exuding a look vintage romance that is feminine, yet not overdone. Many brides are enchanted by lace, envisioning a majestic day in a lush green garden. Magnificent Embroidery - For an ultra elegant, opulent feel, glamour girls savor wedding gowns adorned with intricate hand-embroidered details. This look warrants grand chandeliers, candlelight and an isle of red roses. Ultra-Feminine - As seen on the runway, feminine details are making a big impact. Ribbons, ruffles, flowers and bows are finding their way back onto wedding dresses and taking femininity to a new level. Brides who envision themselves floating along the cobblestones of a historic mansion will love this look. Is It Relationship … Or Is It Religion?

May 17th, 2008 by mairhengl

By Karen Wolff If you were to count up all the Christian “religions”, and their individual sects, branches, and other divisions, you’d probably retire before you even found them all. Why is it so difficult for people to agree about what to believe about faith issues? Whenever there is even the slightest difference in those beliefs among people, another “religion” springs up to add to the growing list. What started over 2000 years ago by somebody who simply told people the most important thing they can do is to love God more than anything, and to treat people right, has become this tremendously complicated, overly interpreted set of rules, regulations, laws, and oh yes…….obligations. Each group interprets differently, each group believes differently, and consequently, you have more Christian “religions” than you can count. This is not to say that organized religion is a bad thing. That most certainly is not the case. Organized religion provides tremendous resources and opportunities to grow in faith and it most certainly can be the best way to worship. But it can also become a problem if it trys to take the place of the primary reason it was formed, to foster and promote an ongoing relationship with Christ. Unfortunately organized religion sometimes takes on a life of its own. The focus on following rules and the resulting condemnation that comes from not following the rules, becomes more important than helping people deepen and grow in their relationship with Christ. That’s when you see people participate in services, traditions, and rituals simply because they believe they “have to” or they are committing a sin. It is only when participation in these things is done with specific intent and purpose that they provide any benefit to the people. And it’s only when these things help deepen the ongoing relationship with Christ, that they have any real value. If, instead of focusing on one’s own own religion, people were to focus on the relationship that Christ promotes, and providing meaningful ways to deepen that relationship, perhaps there could be more unity AND more commonality……..and even more importantly, more relationship amongst the Christian churches. Just think how the face of Christianity would change from many different groups that focus on their differences, to one group that focuses on the real mission of Christianity. Ah yes……to love God more than anything and to treat people right. What a concept……… Karen Wolff is the founder of http://www.christian-books-for-women.com, a website where Christian women can find help with issues they face every day. How To Avoid Injury Compensation Claim Dilemmas

May 14th, 2008 by mairhengl

By Mumtaz Shah You then become frustrated with salespeople asking, or begging for a compensation claim? You don’t know them and they want to be your best ‘buddy’. For a while, I guess?! You dont have a clue about their company, what they do and how they complete. But you’re about to make a mistake, thanks to their sweet talk An injury claim service is something we need in society. A service, we may not need right now, but could surely need it in the future. It’s just like insurance we pay a premium for an intangible item. A premium to cover costs of an accident that ‘might happen’, not ‘will happen’. Compensation claims is nothing new, its been going on for years. However, as time goes by, procedures and conditions change. Sometimes for the better but not always! Loan Agreements Loan agreements came about, with banks, large banks such as RBS, funding a personal injury claim. It wasn’t needed for a claim, but handlers were making money, substantial amounts, per case. As the clock ticked, people caught on and slowly found its way to the back door. But not completely with every company, so beware! Once service providers figured out the lack of business generation due to the use of loan agreements, they needed something new. A new direction to help them to be more profitable another business strategy! Anyway, back to the drawing board and after weeks of playing with the small print, the birth of kick backs came alive! Kick backs? A kick back is a term used by claim handlers to receive money from a claimants compensation. This is a service charge, administration or management fee for maintaining the clients so called ‘best interest’. It’s just an alternative scheme to loan agreements. However the amount deductible was dependable on different factors. This was working perfectly, until large amounts became deductible by different companies. Some were charging four figure sums and for the claimant, it got annoying! Injury compensation claims began spreading like a forest on fire, many setting up and deducting smaller management fees to get business. It got smaller and smaller, then ‘bang’ it began saturating. Why? People caught up AGAIN… Still going on today, however for some, it was back to the drawing board! Brainstorming sessions now lasted months leading to 6 then 12 months, as something tactical was required. Then a new baby was born… 100% Compensation It was fantastic and worked like a charm, well only in the eyes of claim companies The answer to everyone’s question, ‘give me all my compensation money or Im not giving you my personal injury claim?’ In the beginning, it was like a dream come true, until right at the end of the case, ‘boom’ this time more deductions. But how you may ask? Once an injury claim is settled, the specialist pays out 100% compensation, as promised. But the disclosure of deductions after a case is your job to ask, before a company commences in the initial stages. So How Do You Avoid These Dilemmas? ASK!!! Ask if there is a loan agreement in place? No… then proceed. Ask if there is any kick back in place? No… then proceed. Ask if you get ‘all’ of the compensation money (i.e. 100% Compensation)? No… perfect. Now this is how you erase dilemmas to get ALL the money for your injury claim… by asking! It’s easy to claim injury compensation, if you ask! The 12 ‘Revolutions’ were created to put all your compensation in your pocket. By June Carr You have a decision to make this holiday season, are you going to eat nutritionally, keeping those calories in check or throw caution to the wind and have an extra piece of pumpkin pie? I considered titling this article… Uncle Bill and The Second Piece of Pumpkin Pie, but he swore hed disown me if I did. Settling on the tamer choice Thanksgiving Dinner and The Green Bean Casserole, I began to wonder if one could have a satisfying (for everyone involved) Thanksgiving dinner, while also making the meal nutritious. These views may seem diametrically opposed, but with a bit of planning, its possible to have the best of both worlds. Our plan is to prepare a meal that is both enjoyable to eat, and nutritional sound, something you are proud of, and your guests… well theyll be asking for seconds. Variety is the spice of life, and its no different on Thanksgiving. While turkey is the tradition, lets build some variety into our meal. Not only will this provide your guests with a culinary delight, youll also be giving them a feast for their eyes. So what does that mean? Well one of my favorites and standard Thanksgiving fare is the green bean casserole. The recipe is fairly standard; mushroom soup, 3 or 4 cups of green beans, a little pepper, milk and, to kick up the calories a notch, a brimming cup or more of French fried onions. Seasonings to taste could be garlic, onions, parsley, sprinkled with bread crumbs. Depending on how you personalize things, the calories per serving arent that bad, anywhere from 80 to 100. Seconds anyone? While that sounds great (Im getting hunger pangs) consider also a green bean salad. It fits with tradition, while giving your guests a choice of something different. Prep is a snap; green beans, boiling salt water (sea salt of course), a touch of vinegar, a little vegetable oil, onions (dont let them catch you crying), some dill and a wee bit of sugar. Having variety will encourage your guests to sample small portions (they simply have to taste those yams), instead of loading up on one high calorie yummy. Preparing your meal this way provides complex nutrients and scintillating flavors to please the discriminating palate. Go slow. It always amuses me to listen as conversations go from animated to silence as the meal is served. Then pick up again as the plates are cleaned. Uncle Bill (name changed to protect my uncles ego) heads back for seconds, while the kids start eyeing the pumpkin pie and cool whip. Instead of rushing toward the second helping or desert, encourage some conversation, thus slowing things down. Why? It gives your brain time to catch up. It takes approximately 15 minutes for your brain to process the information that you are full and satisfied. If during those 15 minutes you have that second piece of pie, or heaping helping of dumplings, youll find yourself stuffed and uncomfortable. While were all thankful for the food, take a moment to be thankful for your family and friends and the blessings weve received throughout the year. Family and friends are the true spice and variety of life. When you have food, remember those who are hungry.
